Exhibit: Traveling to Europe
Benchmarks: Teamwork/Communication
Skills:
TC101: Understand the cultural traditions of others.
TC104: Listen to different group member and ask relevant questions
Last June, I traveled to Europe with the Foreign Language Club. The Foreign Language Club is an extracurricular activity that my school set up. The group included six of my closest friends and a freshman that I didn’t know that well. This trip taught me a lot about different cultures and the way people act in different countries. (TC101) I got to experience life in a different view and it was extraordinary. As soon as I got off the sixteen hour flight, I instantly knew this trip was going to change my life in a positive way.
We landed in Paris, France; then took a train down to Barcelona, Spain; took a bus to Monte Carlo, France; and then took another bus ride to Rome, Italy. It was easily the best two weeks of my life. I got to meet great people in Europe; I became great friends with my tour guide, Luc, and got to understand the cultural traditions of other’s cultural traditions. Whenever we went to churches we always had to wear clothing that covered our shoulder, chest, and knees. We had to respect others traditions. Luc was a great tour director because he gave us a set of directions and rules for us to follow but also gave us our freedom. For example, when we went to the Eiffel Tower he told us that we could roam around and then gave us a set time when we would meet again.
When I get a job in Psychology, I need to understand that I will be working with different types of people with different ethic views. With the help touring Europe and surrounding myself with different traditions I will be more understanding of others, for what they wear and why, and what they do. As a Psychologist, I will be able to understand more clearly for what they believe in.
In my personal life, I will run across time when people will give me rules that I will not agree with. For example, our schools dress code bothers me because it is more towards women and they don’t want makes to be distracted. Even though I disagree, I still have to follow the rules and respect my school’s traditions.
