Academic: Social Studies

Social Studies has always been my strong suit, when it came it Economics, Government, and Late American Studies, I thought it was fun. Social studies tackles a great number of topics that are interesting to students. Social studies is one of the only subjects I feel comfortable and naturally interested in. With the help of the right approach from my teachers, social studies is one of the most enjoyable subjects that I can learn from in school. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my favorite teacher, Mr. Flint.

In Economics, I learned things I can use in the real life. I enjoyed this class the most because it was easy to compare it to real-life situations. Mr. Flint made it easy to learn about taxes, basic needs, poverty levels, minimum wages, and basically the cost of living. I received a worksheet in the class called “Cost of living Calculations” and it gives you a list of my basic needs: food, housing, electricity, gas. You had to find the price of it all and total it up. I would need to pay around $3,700 per month and $44,000 per year. If I was paid minimum wage, I would be in debt. It definitely taught me how I need to go to college and get a good job so I can pay for all of these expenses.

In government, we never used our textbooks. Instead, we used PowerPoint’s and just took notes. Keeping a notebook was a great idea because I was able to look back at it during homework and when I studied for tests and quizzes. I was able to organize my notes so I always have vocabulary on the first page of the chapter, which was very convenient when I needed to look for a definition.

When I’m a therapist, I will be able to use the skills I learned from doing the “Cost of Living Calculations” when it come to my own private office. I will need to pay taxes and housing; the worksheet really helped me learn to do those things. I will also need to pay attention to patients with great detail to make the appropriate diagnosis, to do that I will take very detailed notes; I will use the skills I learned from government to do that. In my future, especially as a college student with a minimum wage job, I will need to know how to save my money and use it appropriately when it comes to my social life because I will need to spend it on gas, food, and textbooks. To get good grades, I will need to take notes because some classes don’t have textbooks.
