Skill: Dedication
When I was in elementary school, I had absolutely no interest in playing volleyball. I participated in the volleyball try-outs in seventh grade because my friends kept on telling me to try it. After the first day I fell in love with it and was dedicated to make the team. I didn’t have as much experience playing volleyball, but I still made the team.
Ever since I realized how much I loved the sport, I was determined to be the best I could possibly be. I made the eighth grade team the following year, then played in the outside hitting position my freshmen year on JV. My sophomore year, the Varsity coach, Ms. Travis, asked me to practice with her team. I was confused because I wasn’t a good enough hitter to be on Varsity my sophomore year. They explained to me that I had a really good attitude and know the court really well so they wanted me to be a setter. I was really confused because I never setted a day in my life. That summer, I trained as hard as I could because I was determined to make my coached proud.
I made the Varsity team that year and ended the year being the starting setter. I also was the starting setter my junior and senior year. This year was my last year playing high school volleyball. I was honored with the honorable mention all-state award. My coach explained to me that I received this award for my dedication to this sport.
Being able to be dedicated to something is a very valuable skill. Being dedicated to my future job will be great for me because it will make me work harder at work. Dedication will also help me get through college and doing well in my studies.
