Senior Transitions

Exhibit: Student Council

Benchmark: Teamwork/Communication

Skills: TC106: Give and Except Feedback

TC108: Show commitment to the team

When I was a junior I was the junior secretary in student council; this year, as a senior, I am the senior secretary in student council. Even though I didn’t participate in student council my freshman and sophomore year I’m still very committed to it. There are meetings every Tuesday before school at 7:15 and we discuss all the events coming up, for example, homecoming, pep assemblies, and school dances.

At the meetings we would talk about spirit days for spirit week. We always have the same days, comet day, favorite team day, pajama day, and hat day. For the past two years I have tried to make the spirit days more unique and fun. I gave them my opinion and they accepted it, but they wanted to keep favorite team day, and comet day. We really wanted to do stop-light day, but it got turned down by our principal. Stop-light day is when you would wear a different colored shirt depending on your relationship status. So, you would wear green if you were single, yellow if you were talking to someone and red if you are taken. I showed a lot of commitment in the student council by making it to every meeting. I showed commitment by participating in the assembly games, and helping set up the dance decorations. I also have to go to all of the float buildings, and set up class meetings. It is especially more work this year because the seniors have a lot to get done this year because of graduation, prom, and, of course, all of the senior pranks.

I have definitely learned some valuable skills, being in student council. I’ve learned how to stay committed to a team. I have also learned how to give and except feedback.I can use these skills at work. If one of my co-workers have a question about something I can easily give them an answer, vice-versa. Staying committed to my staff is what makes a working atmosphere happy, and make it easier for me to get along with my co-workers. In the future, I will use these skills in college. I wil be able to give and except feedback and show commitment to my roomates by keeping things organized.
